Benefiting My Body and My Brain This Winter with a Bath

bath, winter bath, self-care, wintertime

I hate to be the cliché woman, but I’m going to be her anyway. Baths in the winter are life. And just so you know, I may or may not be soaking in bath salts writing this blog from my tub.

We’ve all done it. We’ve locked our bathroom doors, lit candles, poured a glass of wine, and filled our tubs with the hottest water we could stand. Truth be told, I’ve also taken a bath in the morning with a cup of coffee. Don’t judge, because if you haven’t tried a bath in the morning, you totally have to try it out. You won’t be sorry.

Sure, baths have healing properties, but generally, women take baths to escape. You can fill in the blanks with the reasons why you escape to the solitude of a hot bath because as a working mom, I don’t have enough fingers and toes to count the reasons why I love a bath. I just know that when I take a bath, I always feel better than I did before I soaked.

My Body Begged Me for a Bath

A few weeks ago, I left my CrossFit class practically dragging. I pushed myself close to muscle failure, and my body was sore. I knew if I didn’t get home and take a bath, I’d be struggling to move for a few days. No matter how much I train my muscles, I still get sore. It’s part of the process. So, I went home, did the things I needed to do with my family, and planned to soak for at least a half an hour.

By the time my kids went to bed, it was late. At that point, I was tired, cold, and even sorer. I contemplated getting ready for bed instead of taking a bath, but I knew I needed some me time. I needed to sit in a hot bath and not only heal my muscles, but also relax my mind and take care of my body. Since it snowed that day, I felt extra chilly. I pulled out my little space heater and warmed the bathroom. Did you know that heating the air in the bathroom will make you feel more comfortable inside the tub during the winter? It’s true! I feel like the warmer air helps keep my bath water at comfortable temperature for longer, plus, the warm and steamy air also makes my body butter soak in more quickly once I get out of the tub. It’s a win-win!

Posh to the Rescue

Once my bathroom was warm, I finally felt good about my decision to take a bath that night. Instead of just soaking in the tub, I pulled out some of my favorite Posh products and did a full-on winter spa in my bathroom. Since my muscles were screaming at me, I poured a few scoops of Muscle Through into my bath. The second the bath salts hit the hot water, I immediately inhaled the rosemary steam, and crawled into the tub and submerged myself in the soothing water. The Epsom salts and the magnesium sulfate in Muscle Through started to relieve the tension in my sore muscles.

While I soaked, I applied Cackle Spackle to my face to detox my pores. I’m a mom. Do you really think I came home and washed my face as soon as I got back from the gym? Since I needed to pull out all of the impurities, Cackle Spackle came to my rescue with all of its charcoal detoxing goodness.

While I detoxed and relaxed, I cleared my head of all of the clutter. I needed to take care of my mind as I took care of my body. A half an hour before I got into the bath, I had to force myself into the tub practically, but once I was in the water, I knew that taking that bath was one of the best decisions I made that day. I stopped worrying about the holiday events coming up at my kids’ school; I stopped thinking about gifts, and I stopped thinking about the other items on my never-ending to-do list.

Bathe to Better Your Whole Self

During the winter, it seems like we run ourselves ragged trying to be the best moms, the best partners, the best bosses or employees, and the best women that we can possibly be. We forget that we can’t be the best at all of the things if we don’t take the time to take care of ourselves. So, that night in my warm bathroom, I stepped out of my tub with my head in a better place. I vowed that I’d take a bath at least two nights a week over the next few months. I know these baths are one of the best things that I can do for both my body and my mind. Try and set aside time to do the same this winter. How many times a week do you promise to provide yourself with me time?
